Do I really need to have 20% of my brain removed?
Brian had been suffering from seizures for ten years. He had no recollection of experiencing the seizures until people would point it out. But when Brian was in two horrific car accidents as a result of the seizures, he realized something was very wrong. “The seizures were disrupting my life. They forced me to quit my job and leave everything.”
Brian’s treating doctor referred him to an epilepsy center where specialists diagnosed him with epilepsy and recommended surgery that would remove 20% of his brain. Brian was shocked and skeptical. He didn’t even know he was having seizures and felt in the dark with the decision to have the surgery. “I had to figure out what to do next,” Brian recalls. “I had to figure out if I was doing the right thing.”
He reached out to Best Doctors and was put in contact with Helen, his Member Advocate. “She was perfect,” Brian states. He recalls thinking “this is more time than my own doctor spends with me.” Helen and her team collected Brian’s medical records and submitted them to one of Best Doctors’ nationally renowned experts, the Head of Epilepsy Surgery at Cleveland Clinic.
When Brian received his Expert Report from Best Doctors the contents amazed him. The Expert confirmed Brian’s epilepsy diagnosis and agreed with performing surgery. Brian remembers the relief he felt when the expert agreed with his own doctors, saying “He was totally behind it. He concurred with strategy and possible solutions.”
With the support of the Expert, Helen and the Best Doctors team, Brian went through with the procedure. After the surgery, Brian praised Best Doctors. “I haven’t felt this good in five years!” he states. His enthusiasm is coupled with a renewed independence. He has returned to work and he is driving a car without worry. Brian is grateful to Best Doctors for helping him “redevelop independence and become self-reliant again.”
