Peter McClennen, Chief Executive Officer
Peter brings more than 20 years of experience leading a wide range of health care IT service companies and health systems operations. Immediately prior to joining Best Doctors, he served as President of Population Health Management at Allscripts Health Solutions, building a new business unit focused on the transition to value-based care through patient engagement, systems interoperability and analytics. Previous to that, he led dbMotion Inc, a global medical informatics company, from its early days as a start-up with only one client, to an industry leader in the interoperability and Health Information Exchange (HIE) market space; dbMotion was subsequently acquired by Allscripts. Peter spent his early career in hospitals and medical imaging centers followed by roles at Fujifilm Medical Systems, GE Healthcare and AMICAS Inc. With a deep concentration in health care, he uniquely understands the complex environment and the critical intersection of quality service and efficient operations that lead to sustained success, both in the U.S. and in global markets.
John Varvaris, President and COO
Since 2008, John has been in an Executive Leadership position at Best Doctors. Initially as EVP & CFO, in 2012 John was named Chief Operating Officer, and in 2013 President & COO. During his tenure at Best Doctors, John has led the transformation, execution, and operations of Best Doctors’ aggressive growth strategy. John has over 30 years of broad business experience in a variety of leadership roles. Prior to joining Best Doctors, John has held positions as Senior Vice President & CFO at Old Mutual US Life Business, and was a Partner at Ernst and Young, LLP where he served large and small clients in healthcare, health insurance, and other industries. John holds a Master of Science degree in Finance from Loyola College, where he has subsequently taught graduate and undergraduate courses as an adjunct professor. As an undergraduate, John attended Shippensburg University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business.
Gary Baker, Chief Financial Officer, CPA, CMA
Gary Baker is responsible for the financial, auditing and risk management activities of the company. Gary brings more than 30 years of diverse experience to the CFO role in planning and analysis, business advisory capacities, accounting, auditing, and strategy development, for firms including multi-national companies, healthcare providers, payers, financial services firms and professional services organizations. Most recently, Gary was Chief Operating Officer at a large health services firm, where he was responsible for both operational and financial performance. He has also served in senior executive positions with a healthcare-related start-up firm, a $40 million venture backed professional services firm serving the education industry, a $52 million healthcare utilization management organization and several payers with responsibility for profitability of organizations with revenues from $2 billion to $4 billion. Gary attended Loyola University in Maryland, from which he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
Nancy Powers, Senior Vice President, Global Business Development for Services
Nancy oversees the U.S. and Global Sales, Account Management and Marketing teams and also leads global business development efforts for Best Doctors' services. Nancy has 25 years experience in sales and sales leadership in the health care arena. Her experience encompasses co-founding CorSolutions, formerly one of the largest Disease Management organizations. Nancy most recently held the position of VP of sales and account management at HMC, a division of Wellpoint, where she built the sales team, and drove over $18 million in sales in 2 years. Nancy holds a BS degree from Syracuse University.
Jeff Harner, Chief Analytics Officer
Jeff brings a lengthy career in health analytics and informatics to Best Doctors/Rise Health. Previously, Jeff was the Associate Vice President of Performance and Outcomes for Nationwide Better Health where he was responsible for analyzing outcomes across their business portfolio including Medical Management, Health Promotion, Disability Management, Absence Management, and Population Risk Assessment. His work focused on providing information-based business intelligence and applying information and analytics to solve specific problems for clients and business leaders. Prior to his work with Nationwide Better Health, Jeff served for five years as the Vice President of Clinical Informatics at Cigna HealthCare. His experience also includes work as the CFO for HealthNet of Southern California. Jeff holds a degree in healthcare administration from Providence College and a masters in healthcare management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Martin Luethi, PhD, Chief Information Officer
A native of Switzerland, Martin brings more than 12 years of commercial software development management experience to Best Doctors/Rise Health. Before joining Best Doctors/Rise Health, he was a Senior Director at Optum, a technology and services company owned by UnitedHealth Group, where he oversaw software development of an EMR product line. Previously, Martin held several roles at Picis, a global provider of information solutions for high-acuity care areas, including positions in Architecture, Development, and Quality Assurance. Martin is a frequent speaker at international technology and quality conferences. His interests include software development methodologies, information systems architectures, and human computer interaction and usability. Martin received his PhD from the Institute of Information Systems, Department of Information Engineering of the University of Bern, Switzerland.
Lewis Levy, MD, FACP, Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs & Chief Quality Officer
Lew Levy, MD, FACP is the Senior Vice President, Medical Affairs and Chief Quality Officer at Best Doctors. He provides medical leadership to the clinical operations team to deliver the highest quality clinical information on diagnosis and treatment to members and their treating physicians. He has over 25 years of clinical experience as an internist at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston. Dr. Levy also has an extensive teaching career as a preceptor in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He continues to practice primary care internal medicine and has participated in pioneer ACO, HMO and FFS arrangements.
Dr. Levy earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Kelly M. Bliss, Vice President of Human Resources
Kelly M. Bliss, Vice President of Human Resources joined Best Doctors in 2014 with over 20 years of Human Resources experience within a variety of industries. Kelly has held senior leadership positions within several high-growth organizations including a large global technology company and a prominent architectural design firm. At Best Doctors Kelly is responsible for the Global HR strategy including HR Delivery, Organizational Development, Talent Acquisition and Talent Management. She is passionate about building high functioning leadership teams and aligning organizational culture with commercial goals and purpose. She holds a BA in Industrial Psychology from Nichols College and maintains the designation of (SPHR) as a certified Senior Professional of Human Resources by the HR Certification Institution.
Sue Leary, Vice President of U.S. Operations
As Vice President for US Member Services and Operations for Group Health business, Sue leads the team responsible for connecting members to medical specialists who can best address each member’s personal health challenge. Member satisfaction and clinical quality are key objectives, ensuring every member experiences a positive, memorable interaction with Best Doctors. Sue has over 20 years of experience in Operations including: customer service, eligibility, enrollment, data analytics, vendor management and consumer driven healthcare. Prior to joining Best Doctors, Sue was the Senior Director for Service Strategy and Engagement at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts responsible for building strategies to enhance the overall customer experience. During her tenure she was the Director of Member Service and drove results for outstanding customer service ratings, world class call center achievements, new training and quality programs and implemented a new service model and tools to support member experience. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College.
Nestor Tarragona, MD, Medical Director
As the Medical Director of the Direct Insurance Division, Dr. Tarragona is focused on medical strategy and improving the functionality and integration of Best Doctors products and services. Prior to formally joining Best Doctors in 2009, Dr. Tarragona trained at Harvard Medical in 2002 with Best Doctors’ founding physicians. His impeccable ability at problem solving and extensive medical knowledge made him an ideal fit with Best Doctors, where he continues to promote medical excellence in the industry. Dr. Tarragona graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1999, and completed his residency at the University Hospital. More recently, Nestor completed his second residency training in Internal Medicine at the New England Medical Center, Tufts University.
